So, we are two weeks in to school and my voice always lets me know when school starts. This year I have been given the opportunity to teach ALL of the kids in the school and my poor voice has taken the brunt of it. Think about getting your favorite books and being able to read them for about four hours straight. Bliss right? Well, my voice seems to disagree.
I love reading to students. It makes me so happy to get into character and have their undivided attention (my husband says that). Reading Hatchet transports my fifth graders to the Canadian wilderness. The One and Only Ivan sparks compassion towards others in my fourth graders. My younger students were given the chance to check out a book for the very first time and too see their faces and feel that excitement was lovely.
So, if my voice has to suffer for a child’s happiness I will drink tea with lemon and enjoy a Labor Day weekend of silence.
